THE MEAT LOCKERS [jam space]

[The Meat Lockers was the main place in Victoria for bands to jam from 199? until 199?, when the building burned down. The building (located on Chatham St., near Capital Iron) was a three-floor abandoned meatlocker, some rooms still had meathooks hanging in them, and to many Victoria punks it was a second home (to a few, it was home). The memories live on: the obscene graffitti, the mice, the spiders, the broken bottles, the Smoked Out Brainzz jamming all day (every day), Captain Tim always milling around, etc. R.I.P.]

MISSION OF CHRIST

[Mission of Christ, also known as M.O.C., started in January of ‘86 as a four-piece with Kev Smith (ex-Sludge Confrontations) joining after a couple of shows. They were punk kids influenced by metal and crossover and made the mistake of playing metal shows, which almost always turned ugly and violent. They released their first demo on Tetragammaton Tapes (a name Kev made up for the release), and their split 7” with Fratricide was the first release by Kim Kinakin and Cory Yuzak of Final Notice Records in Vancouver, BC. In ‘87, Kev was replaced by Tolan McNeil (ex-Tantrum). They played their last show in ‘89, and then broke up because “it was getting depressing to play music while people beat each other up,” says guitarist Steve McBean. McBean says that’s also probably why Onionhouse, featuring three M.O.C. members, turned out to be such happy pop-punk. Mike Synnuck went on to sing in Soulcharge and Randy Long (RIP) went on to play guitar for Shutdown. In 1990, Long was shot by a cop in Edmonton. Victoria Demo Restoration Projekt has a big archive of Mission of Christ stuff here.]
